Kerala is beautiful all year, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. Here is a simple guide to help you pick the right time for your trip.
October to March – peak season (best overall)
Pleasant weather, clear skies and calm backwaters make this the most popular time. It is ideal for houseboat stays in Alleppey and Kumarakom, tea gardens in Munnar, wildlife in Thekkady and beaches in Kovalam and Varkala. Book early for Christmas and New Year.
April to May – summer
The coast gets hot and humid, so head for the hills: Munnar, Wayanad and Vagamon stay cool and green. Hotel rates are often lower than in peak season.
June to September – monsoon
Kerala turns lush green and waterfalls like Athirappilly are at their best. It is the traditional season for Ayurveda treatments, and prices are at their lowest. Expect heavy rain on some days and plan flexible sightseeing. Onam, Kerala’s harvest festival with boat races and feasts, usually falls in August or September.
