After having your resplendent Goan breakfast, we proceed towards having a rendezvous with the beautiful state of Goa. Today we go on a sightseeing tour of North Goa which consists of locales such as Aguada fort and lighthouse, Anjuna Beach and Calangute beach.
Aguada Fort and Lighthouse
One of the most formidable forts of the Portuguese in India, the Aguada Fort which was built to protect Goa from the marauding navies of Dutch and Marathas. This is the place where Mandovi meets the Arabian Sea. The peculiarity of this Fort is that it never fell into enemy hands. The ingenuity of architecture lies in the fact that the fort uses the natural terrain of the region to protect itself. Built entirely of the local laterite stone, the fort is an exquisite example of Portuguese military architecture.
There is a 4 storeyed lighthouse lying near the Fort was built way back in 1864 and was designed to emit light every 30 seconds. The lighthouse is closed for public viewing, but do not worry, a new lighthouse has been constructed in close vicinity to the old one. Climb atop a new lighthouse that was built on the edge of the cliff called the Aguada lighthouse and experience the serene beauty of the Arabian Sea.
Anjuna Beach
Anjuna Beach is a 2 km long stretch of sandy paradise in Goa. Yoga centers, cafes, restaurants, bars, the sun, and the warm Arabian waters, these are the benefits that you get at the Anjuna beach. Water sports such as Jet skiing and paragliding are available at the beach at a fair rate. You could also choose to just laze around the beach, doing nothing, just gazing at the sea.
Calangute Beach
The busiest beach of Goa, Calangute Beach will enchant you with its mesmerizing beauty. Although the sea breeze caressing your body will be sufficient for you to consider yourself lucky to be at the Calangute, the alluring beach contains much more. Also known as, “Queen of Goa’s beaches” the beach is filled with action. You will savor tantalizing seafood which is being sold on the roadside stall as well as restaurants, inviting bars which have a beautiful sea view and plenty of water sports in this 4-mile long beach. We will go on a sightseeing expedition of the old Goa churches which are dated back to the 16th century. You can view the classical, the Manueline and the baroque styles of architecture all within close vicinity of each other in Goa. Saint Augustine Church, the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Saint Francis of Assisi Church are some of the most famous and iconic old Goa churches that will leave you longing for more.
Light a candle, say a silent prayer or just experience pure bliss in the home of God at these beautiful churches. One of the most famous places of worship in Goa is the SE cathedral. The word “Se” means to see. The cathedral was built as a victory monument to celebrate the Portuguese victory over an invading Muslim Army. The main attraction of the SE cathedral is its Golden Bell, which is considered to be one of the best church bells in the world.
Shri Mangueshi Temple
The Mangueshi temple is dedicated to Lord Mangueshi who is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. A deep Stambh, which is a seven storeyed oil lamp tower is the prime attraction of this Temple.
Dona Paula
Located at the conjunction of Mandovi and Zuari rivers, the Dona Paula viewpoint is an epitome of romance. The name of this viewpoint is based on the name of a romantic heroine in Portuguese folklore, and this place is considered to be one of the most picturesque places in entire Goa.
